ABOUT THE FABRIC
ALPACA
Alpaca wool is primarily sourced from the alpaca (Vicugna pacos), a camelid native to the Andean regions of South America, particularly Peru, Bolivia and Chile.
The fiber is obtained through shearing, a careful and non-invasive process carried out once a year — typically in spring — to ensure the animal’s well-being and protect it from rising summer temperatures.
Alpaca fleece consists of a single fiber structure and is naturally free of lanolin, making it hypoallergenic. Depending on the animal, the fiber varies in fineness and length, with the finest grades being especially valued for high-quality garments.
Its semi-hollow microscopic structure traps air, providing excellent thermal insulation without adding weight. This allows alpaca wool to retain warmth in cold climates while remaining surprisingly breathable in milder conditions.
Soft, lightweight and silky to the touch, alpaca fibers can range between 15 and 25 microns in the finest grades, comparable — and often superior — to many luxury wools.
Alpaca wool is available in a rich spectrum of natural shades, from ivory whites and soft beiges to deep browns, greys and blacks. Thanks to this natural colour diversity, it is often used undyed, preserving its inherent beauty while reducing the environmental impact of textile processing.
