Frequently Asked Questions

About the fabrics and garments

  • Double-face is an artisanal tailoring technique in which the fabric is worked on both sides without an inner lining. The inside of the garment is as carefully finished as the outside. This technique can only be applied using the highest quality fabrics, such as virgin wool or cashmere. Every seam is sewn by hand, with an allowance of just 5 millimetres — against the 15 millimetres standard in conventional tailoring. Learn more on our double-face technique page.

  • Virgin wool is fibre obtained directly from the animal for the first time, without having been previously processed or recycled. This gives it greater softness, elasticity and durability than recycled or blended wool. At Murmells we work with virgin wool from the historic mills of Biella, in the Italian Piedmont, and the reference looms of Huddersfield, in England. Learn more on our virgin wool page.

  • Biella, in northern Italy, is the world reference in high-end fabric production. Its historic mills have spent centuries perfecting techniques that no conventional manufacturer can replicate. The majority of our fabrics come from there. When a garment calls for a different character, we seek that same excellence in other textile traditions of reference, such as the looms of Huddersfield or Andean alpaca fibre processed in Italian mills. Learn more on our Biella page.

  • Camel hair is an extraordinarily soft and thermal natural fibre collected during the natural moulting of the Bactrian camel, without any intervention or harm. Its collection respects the animal's natural cycle. Learn more on our camel hair page.

  • Cashmere is a natural fibre obtained from the inner coat of the Capra Hircus goat, which inhabits the Himalayan plateaus and the steppes of Inner Mongolia. It is up to three times warmer than sheep's wool, extraordinarily lightweight and with an unmistakable silky handle. Its scarcity is real: each goat produces barely forty grams of usable fibre per year. At Murmells we work exclusively with Top Mongolia cashmere — the highest production grade. Learn more on our cashmere page.

  •  It is the reference composition in Italian high-end tailoring and has been for decades. It combines the extreme softness of cashmere with the structure and resilience of virgin wool in exact proportions. The result is a fabric that offers the best of both fibres: the noble handle of cashmere with the durability and shape memory of virgin wool. It is the only composition that allows demanding techniques such as double-face to be worked without compromising either softness or resilience. Learn more on our cashmere and virgin wool page.

  • Alpaca is an Andean fibre up to eight times warmer than sheep's wool and naturally hypoallergenic — it contains no lanolin, making it suitable for sensitive skin. At Murmells we work with short-pile, long-pile and Baby Alpaca, processed in Italian mills. Learn more on our alpaca page.

  • With proper care, a coat crafted in virgin wool, cashmere or camel hair can last for decades. Noble fibres improve with use and time, gaining softness and adapting to the body. It is a long-term investment, not a seasonal purchase.

  • Our coats require dry cleaning. Between wears, air the garment in a ventilated space — noble fibres have natural self-cleaning properties. Always store folded, never hung. For seasonal storage, use a breathable fabric bag. Add a cedar or lavender sachet to protect the natural fibres from moths. Each product page includes specific care instructions for its fabric.
